The Project

A complete redesign of the FedWeb CMS

A complete redesign of the FedWeb CMS

The JFNA approached our studio for a complete redesign of their content management system, FedWeb, that allows Federations and communities to build custom websites tailored to their individual needs. I handled research and discovery, information architecture, UX and visual design. In addition to the redesign, I consulted with over 40 individual Federations, advising them on best practices and making impactful revisions to their FedWeb websites, and I developed and completed training on the system. I also designed a supporting website for Federations that provided assets and collateral.

Discovery

An extensive map of system requirements

The project began with an in-depth discovery process to understand and document the extensive feature set of the CMS. I delivered a detailed, thorough outline of FedWeb that led to developing the system navigation, screens and architecture. This detailed document guided the next phases of the project, covering FedWeb sign up, the control panel, settings, workflow, content, asset management, pages, templates, members and more.

UX and information architecture

A feature rich control panel

FedWeb includes a control panel with a drag-and-drop page builder, asset and member management, and a moderation and notification system for administrators and content managers. All content is managed in a simple outline format that automatically generates website navigation.

Visual Design

An back end UI design system paired with a responsive front end

A design system for the control panel ensured a consistent UI across the system. The result of working within the system is fully functional Federation websites. I designed several responsive themes for FedWeb, with simple color palette settings up to full CSS control. The themes share a consistent code-base, but have unique designs, allowing Federations to switch between them and customize the look-and-feel while keeping their sites intact.
